A lot's been done, but there is so much more to do!
“Since turning blue in 2022, the Hays County Criminal District Attorney's Office has come far, but there is so much more to do to prepare Hays County for the 2030s."
The 'Lots Done'
Since 2022, the DA's Office has done so much...
Decimated the Backlog of Unfiled Cases. At the beginning of 2022, nearly 5,600 cases sat waiting for a day in court. That has been reduced by nearly 70%!
Invested in the Mental Health Court. Starting with around 4 participants in 2022, the Mental Health Court has expanded exponentially and now provides services to both misdemeanor and felony participants.
Implemented a Pre-Trial Diversion Program. Different from all previous diversion programs, the new Pre-Trial Diversion Program offers a cost-minimal diversion out of court for hundreds of criminal defendants.
Initiated a Family Justice Unit. We re-allocated resources to provide special support specifically for prosecutors handling high risk domestic violence, child abuse, and sexual assault cases.
Continued to hold those who commit the most egregious offenses accountable. Our hardworking and dedicated prosecutors continued to hold offenders accountable to keep our community safe.
Hired a Mental Health Attorney. With the expansion of the Mental Health Court and constant creation of new programs focused on mental health, we invested in a specialized attorney position to coordinate mental health programs.
Instituted an Environmental Enforcement Unit. A new Environmental Enforcement Unit works to ensure that the massive growth and development in Hays County is balanced with the need to protect our land and resources.
Combined with the former General Counsel's Office. All county legal services were brought into the DA's Office to promote efficiency and eliminate previous redundancies.
Invested in new victim services programs. New victim assistance positions were created to address high-risk cases and to work to implement safety-planning methods with particularly vulnerable victims.
Established a Diversion Program for low-level DWI offenses. The new DWI Pre-Trial Intervention Program allows for low-level DWI offenders to have a second chance, while meeting strenuous requirements designed to reduce recidivism and promote community safety.
Revamped protective order services. Changed procedures and focus have resulted in a near ten-fold increase in the number of protective orders requested and approved for victims.
Established an Appellate Division, which will be trusted to create a Conviction Integrity Program. Prior to this year, appeals have been left to trial prosecutors busy with their own cases, now a specially trained division will guarantee the best representation before our courts of appeals and guarantee that past cases were prosecuted appropriately.
